Why do we love our opponents?

One of the great reasons Football is Americas sport; a kid gets knocked down and hesitates to get up, 100k people all have his well being in mind, literally seconds before, half of those people passionately disliked him. Why do we love our opponents? Because we hope they believe as much as we do, that they hold the the same ideals close to heart, that they like us have compassion for their fellow man.
